THE CLIMATE CHANGE TRAIN: GREECE–TURKEY 2010

photo: British Council
Since July 2005 there has been a train service between Thessaloniki and Istanbul. The train leaves Thessaloniki at around eight in the evening and twelve hours later arrives in Istanbul with intermediate stops at a number of major northern Greece towns.
A number of Greek Climate Advocates will board the train and arrange a series of events at the main train stations in Thessaloniki, Alexandroupoli, Soufli and Istanbul aiming to raise awareness of the climate change problem and the benefits that travelling by train can offer. They will interact with the local community inviting its members to take part in a number of activities aimed at increasing awareness of the need to reduce CO2 emissions. They will also present the initiatives that Climate Advocates have undertaken both in Greece and throughout Europe.

Since this initiative crosses the boarder with Turkey, this project plans to involve the contribution of the Turkish Climate Advocates team – also joining us on this journey – and the Istanbul event will be jointly organised by both Greek and Turkish Climate Advocates.

Green Talks: Climate Change and Environmentally friendly Transportation
In addition, as part of the Climate Change Train activities, we are organising a high profile Green Talks event in Thessaloniki entitled Climate change and environmentally friendly transportation with the contribution of distinguished Greek scientists including Professor Christos Zerefos and Professor Christos Pyrgidis. A detailed programme of the Green Talks event will be announced shortly.

The Climate Change Train 'journey' will last from 17 to 22 September 2010. So come along to meet our Climate Change Train team and take part in the events and activities we are organising in Thessaloniki, Alexandroupoli, Soufli and Istanbul!
