Wassili Lepanto: Positive utopias

Wassili Lepanto was born in Nafpaktos (Lepanto) in 1940. He studied German, history, philosophy and Art History at the Universities of Heidelberg and Mannheim. He lives and works in Heidelberg. His art is consciously and almost exclusively devoted to landscape painting.
The exhibition includes approximately 80 works, both big and small, from the entire course of his creative endeavours, whose focus remained on landscapes.
Ranging from the Mediterranean and the Greek countryside to the mountains of northern Germany and the urban landscape of Heidelberg, Lepanto is enthusiastic in his quest for the ideal landscape, where symbolic elements coexist with objective beauty.
Alongside his constant exhibitions, Lepanto has also published treatises and academic books on art theory, amongst which his manifesto is “Art for man or for an ecological art” (1983), where he develops theoretically his ideas on Ecological Art, which he also introduced to the entirety of his oeuvre.
The exhibition is accompanied by theoretical texts about his art, as well as a film about his life and oeuvre.
